Last Saturday at this time the US was exiting the World Cup at the hands (feet) of Ghana but, more significantly, my household was all recovering from Andres' third birthday party.
This was the third time we tried to hold the birthday bash at Auburndale Cove in Newton. This time is was a success; we had a great location and the weather was beautiful, unlike in 2008 (when it poured and poured) and in 2009 (when it was overcast, cold, and buggy). We were also fortunate to have a number of family and friends join us for the occasion.
Our picnic location was close to the play structure so the party-goers were largely dispersed for most of the time. Which made me wonder whether we were holding a party at all or if it as just an extra-large playdate. (I'm not sure it mattered to the kids who were there--they were quite content to play on the swings, threaten the ducks, and run after each other.) No matter though; the kids had a good time and behaved themselves, and when it was time for cupcakes, everybody came together and sang happy birthday.
(I do have video of everybody singing, though it needs a bit of work to find--Andres accidentally erased it from my camera the other day!)
Popular activities included making decorative bags to hold bubbles:
And playing soccer:
And being too cool for each other.
So a good period of recovery was needed for everyone afterwards. We watched the soccer game (definitely not relaxing) and Andres slept for a couple hours. Then it was on to unwrapping presents, dinner, and the typical bedtime routine. And, after everyone had gone to sleep for good, more cupcakes for dad.
