The Vagaries of Memory

I had a deja vu moment the other day. It was evening, and I was giving Celia a bath in her blue tub--rather, she was giving herself a bath, and I was taking pictures. She was being a ham. I reviewed my photos after a few shots (yay for the immediate gratification of digital capture) and I thought "I've seen this photo before."

Now mind you, I have not taken a lot of photos recently, and my camera almost never goes in the bathroom anymore (insert your own joke here) for fear of splashing or Major Toddler Accident. And I think this was the first time I had ever really done a "photo shoot" with Celia in the bath. I was convinced that I had taken a shot of Celia that looked exactly like one of Andres a couple years back.

So I looked through the archives and I compared images. And, much to my surprise, my two children look nothing alike, despite what my mind remembers.

Celia, ~8 months
Andres, ~9 months

I find this amazing. I guess Current Andres does look a little like Baby Andres--he has to, right? The Elven-like wisps of hair are gone, though, and he's filled out like a soccer defender at the ripe old age of 3.

But I was expecting Andres and Celia to look much more alike in these photos. They look nothing alike. She is much fatter all around (probably because she eats like Takeru Kobayashi), her hair is shorter (Andres' do was awesome at the time but, looking back, I question our [ok, mainly my] judgment), and their expressions are different.

I know that expressions change from photo to photo, but I think these two shots capture something about who each of them is. Celia is often content but prone to fits of laughter when tickled. She loves attention. Andres' smile was always less emotional, more familiar...more "it's nice to see you again" than "I'm having a great time!" (Though as I continue to review my photos, I'm being confronted with evidence that this idea, too, is hogwash.)

Andres, ~11 months
Celia, ~8 months

I enjoy looking back through the photo archives to remind myself of what both kids were like when they were younger. Yes, I understand that my oldest just celebrated his third birthday, and that I'm not exactly looking back through the decades. But how is it that I misremembered something so fundamental as what my kids looked like only a little while back?

  1. I do like the way Andres's hair used to look like something from Lord of the Rings.

  2. I am somewhat ashamed that it took us so long to cut it. It was so cool though...it totally fit his personality. I have a couple shots of him standing over a heating vent with the air blowing through his hair; he looked like he belonged in White Snake. We took him to the barber shortly thereafter.

  3. It's hard to notice the similarities between the two when poor Andres had the misfortune of having to wait until he was 1 to get some sun. (Seriously, he is like Travison-pasty!)
I also think that sometimes photos are deceiving--there are a few photos where I think, "When did s/he ever look like THAT?" Interestingly, they weighed about the same in those photos and I even think that Celia is longer...so how she looks fatter is beyond me. Just goes to show how boys have it easier:)

  4. It must be my old age but to me, Andres and Celia look very much alike in the pictures, yet totally "themselves".

    You have great kids!
