Rumors of a snowstorm began circulating a week ago, and by the time yesterday rolled around, you would have thought that we were getting the second coming of the blizzard of '78 (aka "The Great One", aka "The One Everyone over 40 in Massachusetts Has a Story About"). Schools were closed pre-emptively (including Newton), plows were put on watch, and on-street parking was banned in most communities.
Driving home a little after midnight last night, I was beginning to wonder whether we had all been duped. Nary a flake troubled my journey. Could this storm really be that bad? And where would all that snow come from in only a few hours time? No way this could live up to the hype.
8 hours later I awoke to a foot of snow and the realization that, yes, the forecasters had nailed this one.

Snow days had lost a bit of their luster in my post-college/pre-child days. They were not necessarily days off from work; in fact, they just meant lousy driving conditions and near fistfights with Brighton residents over parking spaces. Waking up and seeing the extent of the snowfall was always interesting, but soon after venturing into the cold and wind the lustre of the experience wore off.
Now, though, I get to experience how exciting it is for Andres and Celia (mainly Andres) to see snow, and the fun of these days has come rushing back.
It was too cold for Celia to come out today, so she hung out indoors--hopefully tomorrow or Friday we can take her for a little sled ride. Andres was happy to come outside and use his new shovel to clear the walkway. This often consisted of him lifting a pile of snow and then dumping it onto the path next to him, but no matter--he was having a good time and not totally undoing our efforts. He also helped Natalia brush her car off, doing that job with care and precision (for a 3-year old).

Glad the shovel came in handy! Tell Andres he can come to Nana and Papa's house and shovel our 16" of snow! Can't wait for Spring. Give them both a xoxo for me.
