Final Friday

Today is a milestone of sorts: it is my last official day on parental leave. On Monday I will don my work clothes once again (they look quite similar to the clothes I've been wearing the past 10 weeks), pull my laptop out from underneath the bed, and will soldier on into the office for my first 8-hour day since the middle of March. I'm not very happy about this, and as a result I have not really let my mind wander to what my first day back will be like. Related: I still haven't checked my email since 3 days after I left work. Monday will be sobering.

But enough downer talk. Today was a great day. The beautiful weather from yesterday stayed put, so we were treated to sunny and 70s again. Yay.

Andres was in desperate need of a haircut, so the day began with a trip over to Lessard's in Brighton. After a good 30 minute wait Andres sat still (on his own!) while barber Mike cut his hair. Apparently not all boys react the same way, as I heard Mike mumble "boy I wish all kids sat this still." That was nice to hear--especially about a child who sits still about 1% of the time he is awake. The haircut itself is killer and makes Andres look like a bona fide Big Boy.

Next up was a trip to Dover to see Papa. He is recovering from minor knee surgery (meniscus tear), so we mainly hung out inside where he could rest, stretch, and ice his knee. Both Andres and Celia found fun things to do though. Andres, clearly trying to disprove Barber Mike's earlier comment, had fun running and diving in the living room:

Celia played on her mat and even rolled over--from back to tummy to back--a few times. She also enjoyed watching her brother act like a fool:

In quieter moments, Andres was still long enough to build a mountain out of plastic rings. It didn't end well though:

The weather was too nice to pass up, so we did go for a little walk around the neighborhood. Celia was content to look around at everything while her brother went in search of the elusive mail truck, which we eventually saw a couple times. Then it was lunchtime and, finally, time to pack up and head home.

Celia conked out in the car after about 5 minutes. Andres, not so much...he stayed awake the whole time, and informed me when we got home that he was not tired and didn't want to take a nap. He was a good sport for a little while and tried to get some sleep in his room, but after 20 minutes he emerged wide awake. I decided to let him stay up--he had had a good day after all, and he didn't seem overtired. We played living room baseball and watched part of a Yankees-Royals game from 1990 (Deion vs. Bo Jackson, I guess) on the MLB Network.

However, I wasn't too surprised when Andres fell asleep on the way home from Whole Foods a couple hours later...I dragged him inside and put him on the couch, where he lay uncomfortably for a few minutes before being dragged out of his reverie. Apparently even Big Boys need to sleep!
