Playtime

Taking care of both Andres and Celia was a nice break from doing my taxes today (ed note: they are done now, thanks to TurboTax, and hopefully without error). Nothing is ever simple with two kids on very different eating and sleeping schedules, and I always feel out of sync on Wednesdays and Fridays. No matter--today was a beautiful day, so I was determined to get outside for a little bit.

But first things first: it's 8:00 am, I'm all alone with two kids, and the older one wants to entertain the younger one. Solution: throw them both in the crib (ok...I didn't throw anybody; Andres climbed right in once he saw Celia was there).

This was followed by an hour-long nap for Celia. Andres and I played with his Thomas trains for a bit, but only after he put together a full circular track by himself! This was the first time he has ever done it, as far as I am concerned....usually he's content to have various track spurs heading off in all sorts of directions, but today he connected them. He was so proud of himself..."Daddy I made the track!"

Celia woke up, she ate, and then it was a frazzled 20 minutes while I got things ready for our brief trip. We hopped in the car and went to Beaver Brook Reservation in Waltham...I had intended to take a bit of a hike like we did a couple weeks back, but quickly realized that just heading to the tot lot there was the best option for all three of us. Andres seemed to like the new park, but I don't think he found the play structures there as interesting as the one we have close to our place. He did enjoy the sandbox there, and spent a good amount of time piling sand into a bucket and then dumping it out again. We had to leave the tot lot when another toddler refused to share his exceptionally-cool toy truck...Andres took exception to his selfishness, and the other kid took exception to Andres taking exception, so we left, one of us very teary.

We had our traditional Wednesday lunch at Cappy's, then naptime, which thankfully coincided with Sox v. Twins in HD.

This evening was pretty straight forward: dinner (barely eaten), bathtime, and then bedtime. Recently he has been interested in doing his own hair right before bed...I was able to get this on video tonight:

We'll see how bad his bedhead is tomorrow morning.

  1. I've enjoyed your blog. I like hearing about the toys you're playing with, particularly Thomas Trains and exceptionally cool trucks. Of all the cool aspects of raising children, i think im most looking forward to playing with the toys. I genuinely miss playing with legos, which definitely aided in my creative development and probably why I'm more creative than most... "most," meaning, those poor souls that never experienced building imaginary worlds with legos, Thomas Trains, etc.... but, you know, when you get to college you have to give those things up.

I did learn on thing from this post: I never considered that kids could/would be on such different eating schedules... that must be difficult at times.

  2. Playing with the toys is a lot of fun--making your kid appreciate the art of cleaning up afterwards...not so much.

Now that Andres is almost 3, he's a lot of fun to play with. Not that he wasn't fun before...but now I feel like we play together, and he has a good sense of how to play, what's funny, etc. Watching him play with the Thomas trains is wild. Last year he would push the trains around, but had no real sense of how to put a track together. And then a few months ago he started connecting tracks, although they went in odd directions. Now he tries to make circles and paths, and asks me to play with him...it's really wild. I'll post some videos soon of some of the stuff he does.

Eating schedules is tough, though I have things down for the most part. Getting Andres to eat meals beyond PB&J/hot dogs/pizza is another matter!
